How much does the Gates Millennium scholarship pay? ›

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program is another Gates minority scholarship. The program grants an average of $12,785 to 1,000 annually-selected scholars.

The big difference is that the Gates Millennium Scholarships also paid for graduate studies if students were pursuing graduate degrees in computer science, education, engineering, library science, math, public science, or other science-related fields (remember, the Gates Scholarship is only for undergraduate students).

The scholarship program is highly competitive with only 1,000 students selected out of over 50,000 applicants. GMS scholars who choose to pursue graduate studies in the areas of education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health and science are eligible to receive continued funding.

Competition for the Gates scholarship is stiff. In order to be a strong applicant, you should strive for more than the minimum GPA (3.3). Be sure to take advanced, honors, and AP classes when available, and actively seek out extra help from your teachers in any weaker subjects.

The Gates Scholarship's rigorous application process takes place in three phases. After the initial review of over 36,500 applications, 2,000 semi-finalists are selected and required to write a round of essays. Later, once 600 finalists are chosen, each must submit to a personal interview.
