The Greater Nanaimo Cycling Coalition is working on a number of initiatives for 2014 and 2015, which include a Safe Routes to School program and a Healthy School initiative. Both require cooperation between the various Nanaimo schools, the school district, the city department of planning, engineering and parks and recreation, as well as neighbourhood associations and parents groups.
Safe Routes to School
Safe Routes to School programs promote health and physical activity among children of all ages and abilities by encouraging travel to school via safe, active transportation. This program will built on the City of Nanaimo "Safer School Travel Program" and other national programs to create maps and routes for all schools in greater nanaimo. We want to encourage parents and their children to walk or cycle safely to and from school.
Healthy School Program
A healthy school is a place where students have many opportunities - in the classroom, and in every aspect of their school experience – to foster their healthy physical, mental, social and intellectual development.
Healthy schools – also known as health-promoting schools – work with partners from the health and education sectors, and with those from the broader community, to support students to develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime. Many schools achieve this by adopting a Comprehensive School Health approach.
The GNCC will partner with schools that are looking into incorporating Healthy School programming in their curriculum.
Stay tuned to more information on this and other programs we hope to bring to Nanaimo together with our community partners.
